Weekly Roundup 12.31-1.6

Week 2 of 16

Happy New Year!  Week 2 was a challenge for me but I’m glad it’s over.  Don’t get me wrong—I LOVE Christmas and this time of the year but I have been so looking forward to a normal work week and a normal running/lifting routine.

My dad was off on Monday and I had plans to go to the Dubovsky house for New Year’s Eve dinner so I asked my dad if he would be on Georgie lunch duty so I could get in a lunch break run.  I had 4 miles on the schedule (aka about 32 minutes) during a 60 minute lunch break but this stressed me out so much.  It was a beautiful day but I decided to run on the treadmill with the thought of it being a much quicker change into running clothes.  I was practically wearing everything under my work clothes and just switched shoes.  I went right from the treadmill to the shower and then right to my boss’s office for our weekly meeting.  A highlight of the day was that Eric brought me Mary Lou’s coffee which was a PERFECT post-run treat… especially since I didn’t go home for lunch.

New Year’s Eve was fun.  We ordered Chinese food, had a glass of champagne, ate DOTS even though I gave up candy (YOLO!) and played Rummy Royale.  The plan was to go watch the Sandwich fireworks but rain kind of ruined it.  That seems to be the theme of the year.  Instead we all lit off sparklers and I was home before 9pm, in bed by 10.  Perfect.

New Year’s Day I met up with Danielle, Jason and Mike for our annual New Year’s Day bRUNch.  We ran 5 miles then brunched it up at Anejo.  So good.

I woke up Wednesday morning not feeling right.  I made coffee but I didn’t drink it.  That was the first red flag.  Second red flag was that it was a staff meeting day at Burrito Bistro and I only ordered a smoothie.  I had no appetite and my whole body ached.  Eric let me leave after the meeting and I came home and slept for 2.5 hours.  When I woke up I took my temperature and had a fever of 101.  I went right from the couch to bed at 8:30 and stayed in bed until 8:30 the next morning.

I stayed home from work on Thursday.  I took some ibuprofen for my fever and mid-day I started to come back to life.  I went into work for a few hours on Friday to cover for Eric.  I still hadn’t eaten much but I felt like heading out for a run.  The fresh air was just what I needed!  I looped close to work so I could head back at anytime but ended up running 5 miles.  I went home and had a big lunch.  Woo hoo!

There was rain in the forecast for Saturday and I had 12 miles on the schedule.  I had convinced myself on Friday that I wasn’t going to worry about a long run and head to the gym for just a few treadmill miles but I woke up on Saturday totally motivated.  I was thinking I would wait until a little later when the gym was quieter so I sat in my room for about 45 minutes organizing some of my drawers and deciding what I wanted to wear for 12 miles on the treadmill.  When I emerged from my room I noticed the rain had stopped.  The weather forecast was now saying “rain predicted at 3pm.”  I changed really quick and started running before I had any time to change my mind.  There was a light mist that turned into a heavy mist about a mile into my run and continued until I was done.  I was soaked.  It was also very windy (duh) and it took a lot out of me but I did it.

Weekly Roundup 12.24-12.30

Week 1 of 16

Monday kicked of the official first week of 2019 Boston Marathon Training!

The past few weeks I’ve been running more consistently and tried to get my mileage up to around 20 miles per week.  I started back in the gym twice a week and recruited my coworker/friend/Athletic Trainer Craig to help me out.  I took so much time off after last year’s Boston Marathon and my biggest struggle since has been motivation and consistency.  Week 1 brought me a bit of normalcy again as I tend to thrive on routine and having a plan.

Merry Christmas!  Christmas Eve fell on a Monday this year and I worked a half day.  My plan was to go home and run a 4 mile progression run but Georgie was practically begging me to take her with me.  I thought I’d run a mile with her and finish on my own but she kept trotting along for 3 miles!  Some days she really surprises me.

3 miles wasn’t enough though because she was full on energy and a PAIN IN THE BUTT when I hosted Christmas Eve dinner at my house!

After Christmas morning at my parents I headed out for 6 merry miles to the beach and back.   It felt great after stuffing my face with my mom’s French toast casserole!

It was an off week in the gym with a new program starting next week so on Wednesday I stayed after work for some old favorites.

I spent Friday morning at the dentist getting my THREE cavities filled.  Ugh!  It was pouring all day so I went right to the gym for some treadmill miles.  The left side of my face was completely numb and was totally drooling the whole time.  My goal was 5 miles but threw in some 1/2 mile repeats to make the time go by faster.  Plus I missed my progression run earlier in the week so I needed to get in a little speed work.

Saturday was long run day.  10 miles to finish up the week with 24 total miles.  I ran through New Seabury and made a few stops at the water.  My calves were screaming from Friday and my legs were feeling heavy but overall it was a beautiful day and I was happy to be outside.

1 week down, 15 weeks to go!

Other highlights:

·      My hotel room is booked for Boston!  That was my big present this year from my mom & dad.  One less thing to worry about.  My parents are the best.

Why I Registered for the Boston Marathon... Again

What: The 123rd Boston Marathon

Where: Boston, MA

When: April 15, 2019

I know I said over and over that I would never run another marathon.

This time it’s different.

A year ago I registered for the Boston Marathon out of peer pressure.

This year I registered without anyone in my head but my own.  I was excited.  I couldn’t wait to hit submit on my application.

It’s funny.  I had such a horrible run last year.  I wanted so bad to love Boston.  I worked so hard to get there and I was selfish and angry that my race experience was not in the least bit enjoyable.  None of that was my fault.  I was totally prepared.  I was ready to PR.  I couldn’t have done anything more on my end.

Mother Nature ruined it.  She also ruined my love of running for about 4 solid months.

In case you missed it, you can read my full race report here: http://www.jenrunsfastblog.com/2018/04/race-report-boston-marathon.html

One of the first phone calls I received after I crossed the finish line last year was my friend Matt.  I’ve known Matt since I was in high school and ended up working for him for many years at the Falmouth Road Race.  The first words out of his mouth were “I’m so sorry” and “You know that you are at the top of the list for my waiver next year.”

Matt works for Dave McGillvray, race director of the Boston Marathon.  Every year he gets an invitational entry to give out.  He’s asked before but I never felt that I earned it.  At first I thought he was crazy but a few hours later my mind changed to *I WANT IT* and I wanted it bad.

I have unfinished business.  Training officially begins Monday December 24th—two weeks from today.

Here’s to a second attempt at a crop top, long purple ponytail, big crowds, dominating Heartbreak Hill, the sun and happy race day memories.

Boston, you have one more chance.

Mother Nature, don’t be a bitch.
