Weekly Roundup 3.11-3.17

Week 12 of 16

Can you believe there is only 4 weeks left until Boston?!  I can’t.  I mean I know I missed a couple key weeks of training but still.  Time is flying by!  And the good news is that I’m not 100% but I’m pretty darn close.

This week started out with a beautiful 6 miles on Monday.  I was feeling super sluggish throughout the day—daylight savings always kicks my butt—but I couldn’t help but have a great run with the sun shining and hints of spring weather.

I decided to take it easy on Tuesday and opted indoors on the elliptical plus a strength training session.  It was another nice day but I didn’t want to overdo it after 10 miles on Saturday and 6 on Monday.  I was back outside on Wednesday for 4 miles with temperatures dropping again.  I pulled out my 2018 Boston Marathon jacket for some extra motivation.

Thursday night kicked off “birthday weekend” with two really fun spin and swim classes.

I got my nails done on Friday morning before seeing Kathy for PT.  Even though I’d been feeling much better, she suggested I come in for some manual work and to get taped before my weekend long run.  It’s so hard to say no.  She’s too good to me!  I also never get to see her because her only days in the Mashpee location are on Fridays when I’m off so it’s always fun to get to chat with her.

The rest of the day was great.  I treated myself to a big iced caramel macchiato at Starbucks and an everything bagel at Bagel Havel.  I went for a short run with G—our first together since my injury!  Later in the afternoon I went to Naukabout for some day drinking with Craig then came home to carb load and get to bed semi-early to rest up for my long run.

My alarm went off much earlier than I wanted on Saturday morning but I was headed to Plymouth to meet up with my friend Steve who then was driving us to Boston to run on the course.  The Marathon Sports Wellesley store is located at Mile 14.7 which is perfect to run and experience the later stages of the race.  They held group runs each week during Boston Marathon training but this was the first I was healthy enough to attend.  Running out was great.  I was looking around trying to take in some of the sights along the course.  Sights I did not see on April 16, 2018.  Seriously though, nothing was familiar.  Nothing!  When I said I ran with my head down to block out the rain, I was telling the absolute truth.

Along the way we got to run the Newton hills and I now know what hill is Heartbreak Hill.  In case you missed my race report from last year’s Boston Marathon, I was halfway up Heartbreak Hill when I asked another running if we were on Heartbreak Hill.  It’s still not as bad as I imagined.  I’m still thinking it’s more of a mental battle for people.

Once our watches hit 7 miles we turned around to face some nasty headwinds all the way back.  The wind was constant and brought us to a standstill at times.  I remember turning to Steve and saying it felt like we were running in slow motion!  It was brutal.

We got back to the store to a little party with Hoka and I finally tried 26.2 Brew—the beer brewed by Sam Adams made specifically for the Boston Marathon runners.  I also picked up my Boston Marathon jacket as an early birthday present.

After the run I went straight to my parents’ house for a *late afternoon* birthday brunch.  My mom made French toast casserole, bacon and a nice fruit spread while we sipped on mimosas.

We also made a stop to Dairy Queen.  It was opening weekend and we couldn’t pass up buy one, get one.  I met up with Katrina for a while that night to complete the day.  I was exhausted but it was so good to see her and catch up.

The birthday celebrations continued on Sunday.  David and Lindsey made me feel special all day at work.  One of the spinners brought us Irish soda bread.  I am pretty anti-St. Patrick’s Day but I gave it a try!  After work I had my annual birthday lasagna with my parents along with my mom’s famous birthday cake.  Overall a fantastic birthday weekend.  Big thanks to everyone that made it great.

Weekly Roundup 2.19-2.25

Week 9 of 16

“I’m on the right track baby, I was born to be brave.”

Week 9 started off with a quick run outside after work before hitting the gym for a new series of workouts from Greg.  Monday’s exercises were mostly familiar with the addition of body saw planks on the slide board—ouch!

The next three days were not good for my running.  I skipped Run Club on Tuesday and went shopping at Marshall’s instead.  L.A.Z.Y.  My friend Steve sent me a Snapchat and I totally wanted to count those *5 miles* towards my weekly mileage!

I didn’t run again on Wednesday.  The new Wednesday workout was hard.  Probably the hardest yet so I took my time learning the exercises thanks to the help of Greg and Craig.  I snatched with the barbell and tried back squats for the first time.  They were so fun!

The laziness continued on Thursday morning and I stayed in bed too long to get in a run before work.  As a result I hit the treadmill for 4 miles at 7:30pm after a long day and two night classes.  I was beat and was going to stop at 3 but Erin helped push me to 4 miles.

I decided to have a #TreatYoSelf morning on Friday and started the day off by getting my nails done.  I stopped home to pick up Georgie and we headed to Cotuit for our beach to beach run.  I love running that route with her!  She did great!

Later that night I went back to the gym to workout with the ladies (+Craig) and NormaTec.

My mom went with me to Hyannis on Saturday morning to pick up my number for the Hyannis Half Marathon.  I signed up to race earlier in the week even though the forecast was calling for RAIN!  It was so hard to believe because on Saturday morning it was 52 degrees with not a cloud in the sky.  I ran a short shakeout run in the sun as soon as I got home.

I ended the week running a half marathon PR!  Confidence is building with 7 weeks to go until the Boston Marathon!  You can read my full race report here: http://www.jenrunsfastblog.com/2018/02/race-report-hyannis-half-marathon.html

BibRave Pro Product Review: Eagle Creek Pack-It Sport Active Set

Disclaimer: I was recently sent an Eagle Creek Pack-It Sport Active Set to review as part of being a BibRave Pro.  Learn more about becoming a BibRave Pro (ambassador) and check out BibRave.com to review find and write race reviews!

“Don’t Sweat it. Pack-It.”

Let me just start out by saying that this is not a typical product review that you would find on Run Jen Run.  Most of the products I have tested for BibRave have been shoes, compression gear, sunglasses, dog leashes and even protein powder—all products I use WHILE I am running and recovering.  This product—the Eagle Creek Pack-It Sport Active Set—is about organization, odor control and containing your sweaty wet workout clothes.

Have you ever heard of the brand Eagle Creek?

Eagle Creek is a travel outfitter company.  They are packing experts who believe that an organized traveler is a happy traveler.  From luggage to duffle bags to briefcases… Eagle Creek makes quality products built with proven durability.

“The smart way to get your smelly, wet, scattered gear from here to there.”

The Pack-It Sport line was designed with the athlete in mind.  The Active Set comes with a Large Shoe Locker and the Wet Dry Fitness Locker.  Both of the bags have a loop at the top to grab or hang them by but I don’t think the shoe locker and fitness locker were designed to use as a stand-alone bag.  Instead I see them more as organizational tools—smaller bags that can be placed into larger bags!

The Large Shoe Locker fits up to men’s size 13 shoe and features a U-shape zip opening that can be partially unzipped at the top for ventilation.  After one of my Falmouth runs that ended with a stop at the beach, I was a little hesitant to put my sandy sneakers back in the shoe locker—until I realize that all Pack-It Sport products are completely machine washable!  So silly me, it would be so much easier to throw my bag in the wash then it is to vacuum out my car.

The Wet Dry Fitness Locker is a little bigger in size and designed to separate clean clothes from sweaty workout wear.  With two pockets, you can stuff clean and dry clothes in the front and put your dirty and damp clothes in the back.  It’s pretty cool!

Some of the Pack-It Sport key qualities:

·      Antimicrobial
·      Odor Control
·      Water Repellant
·      Ventilation
·      Washable
·      Grab/Hang
·      Ultra-Light
·      Clothing Management/Travel System
·      Wet/Dry Separation

So when do I use my Eagle Creek Pack-It Sport Active Set?

Pretty much anytime I go anywhere to workout!  They are easy to grab, easy to pack and keeps everything organized.  I am constantly packing bags for work because I teach classes, shower after class, run after work… and lately I have been getting in the pool too so you can pretty much always find the Fitness Locker in my work bag.  Instead of using a ton of plastic bags from the grocery store, the Pack-It Sport collection is great because the fabric holds in any funky, embarrassing post-workout smells and I love that the divider keeps clean clothes totally separate.  I usually would end up washing clean clothes even if they weren’t worn because everything would get mixed up in my gym bag.

Other bonuses:

·      There is a lifetime warranty!
·      All Pack-It Sport products come in 4 colors: Black, Blue/Black, Fuchsia/Black and Tennis Ball Yellow/Black.  I personally think it would be fun to color code by activity.  For example, one color could be for running clothes, another color for my spin stuff and one more color for all my pool gear…

Cons:

·      Not really a con but I just found out I’ve been using my Shoe Locker wrong!  Eagle Creek suggests putting the toe in first.
·      I was really hoping for the set in Tennis Ball Yellow.  I love bright colors and it would have made for better pictures!  Guess I’ll have to place an order BUT…
·      Some of the colors in the Active Set are SOLD OUT at the moment! Boo!

Happy running!
