Weekly Roundup 3.4-3.10

Week 11 of 16

I’m back!  So I’m not 100% but I’m back to running and overall feeling pretty good.  I totaled 22 miles on the week with a “long run” of 10 miles.

Monday was awesome running weather for March and I couldn’t wait to get out the door for a run.  My plan was to run 3 miles but that weather!  I ended up running 5 miles and felt great.

I tried spinning on Tuesday morning for the first time since my injury but started to regret it towards the end of class.  I originally thought sitting was aggregating my hip but the angle in a standing climb was not ideal either.  Boo.

Tuesday afternoon I got in a strength training session followed by a short, easy treadmill run.  I may have overdone it so I took Wednesday completely off and only taught about half of my Thursday night spin class on the bike.

I met with Kathy for PT on Friday morning then headed home to a 4 mile run.  Later that day Georgie and I met up with my mom for a nice beach to beach walk in Cotuit.

I had mixed emotions about my “long run” on Saturday morning.  It was another awesome March day and I was looking forward to getting out the door but I was supposed to run my first 20 miler this week.  Kathy said I should run 8.  I was thinking more like 10-12 and honestly I was more nervous about running 10 miles then I usually am before running 20 miles.  It was a big run for me.  If it didn’t go well and the pain returned, I knew that was pretty much it for my Boston 2019 training.  I am running out of time and I couldn’t afford another setback.

The good news is, I ran 10 miles pain free.  I was sore after but that is expected.  In terms of cardio, I was struggling.  I stopped a bunch of times.  I visited Lola and Parker.  I searched for sea glass at the beach.  I took my time and enjoyed it.

Next week I will shoot for 14 miles…

Weekly Roundup 2.4-2.10

Week 7 of 16

Spring is here!  Just kidding.  But it sure felt like it at the beginning of this week.

On Monday not only did it get up to 50 degrees but the sun set at 5:01pm!  What a treat!  I was still feeling a little sluggish from last week so I went outside for 4 easy miles.  Even though it was warm, it felt pretty damp but Tuesday… Tuesday was perfect.  Perfect running weather.  I ran outside for the second day in a row.  This time I went for 5 miles and added in 2 miles of Fartlek running.  It was so refreshing.  I felt great but I did feel a bit guilty.  My original plan was to go to run club but I couldn’t pass up running at 4pm when I got out of work.  Maybe next week…

I lifted on Wednesday.  Part of me wanted to take G for a short night run after, part of me was just lazy.  Lazy won and I convinced myself I needed an extra running rest day.

I got up Friday morning to rain and I debated going to the gym to get in my 5 miles.  As the morning went out, the rain seemed to stop so I grabbed G for a mile and a half before finishing up the rest of my mileage on my own.  Throughout the run we experienced mist then a heavy mist to a light rain then back to cloudy again.  Oh well.  At least I avoided the treadmill this week!

Saturday was back to long run day.  Last week after my 16 miler I was so excited to know I only had 12 miles this week.  I don’t know why because in reality 12 miles is still a lot of work, especially when you want to run well and it’s less than 30 degrees with wind over 25 mph.

I decided to run in Falmouth even though all of my Falmouth routes take me by the water.  That probably wasn’t my best decision but Georgie was happy that she got to hang out with grandma and grandpaw.  The wind was constant my entire run but there were 3 spots in particular where the wind was so strong that I was brought to a standstill.  I had to change up my route in order to survive the run but that meant I was able to take a detour to see Lola and Parker!

Weekly Roundup 1.28-2.3

Week 6 of 16

Let me start out by saying that this week kicked my butt!  For real.  Marathon training hit me hard.  I upped my workouts in the gym, nailed my treadmill speed workout, fought my way through a tough, cold AF long run and now I am BEAT.

My week started off with a Monday afternoon lift session followed by a short run in the dark with G.  It was the first time in quite a while that I left the gym feeling like I really pushed myself.  It was a good feeling but I woke up Tuesday morning with screaming hamstrings.  Spin Tuesday morning helped loosen up my legs to prepare me for Tuesday afternoon’s speed workout.  I opted to stay indoors and ran 6 half mile repeats—my hardest workout so far this marathon training cycle.

Training for Boston last year I began strength training 3x per week (something I did not do for any of my previous marathons) but totally skipped out on the speed work.  This year I’m trying to find a good balance between both by lifting 2x per week and adding back in a speed work day.

Wednesday was pretty much a repeat of Monday.  I kicked butt in the gym then ran with G.  I was so sore Thursday that I suffered through spin and swim then ended up in the NormaTec chair for a bonus recovery session.

I was originally supposed to visit with friends off cape on Saturday afternoon so instead of rushing through a long run Saturday morning, I decided for the second week in a row to run long on Friday.  I mentioned last week how tough that is for me but I knew I needed to just get it done.  It was cold—16 degrees, *feels like* 5 degrees at the start of my run.  I went to work and ran from there with the idea that if it was really TOO cold for me, I would run at least 6 or 8 miles outside then finish up on the treadmill to total 16 miles.

I procrastinated a while in the morning hoping it would warm up but I knew it was not so I bundled up and headed out towards the beach.  It was cold but not uncomfortably cold—well except the few times I was running in the shade with the wind in my face.  BRRR!  When I stopped I was able to take my gloves off without freezing and my phone didn’t die of cold which is always a good thing. After the first 5 miles to the beach I decided I would just stay outside and go for it.  I was probably running faster than I should have been because of the cold because it really hit me with about 3 miles to go.  I struggled.  It was hard.  That run took a lot out of me and I was pretty useless the rest of the day.

Even worse was the sad attempt at an easy treadmill run on Saturday morning.  I did not feel good at all.  My whole body ached.  My legs felt like bricks.  I was a mess but week 6 is done… on to the next, on on to the next one!
