Thank You

People often ask what I think about when I run.  I don’t run with music because running is my time.  Sometimes my mind is going wild with thoughts, ideas and to do lists while other times I think about nothing at all.

This week I was thinking about you guys.

Whether you were part of the team that peer pressured me into signing up for Boston or you have been supporting me since, I owe you.

The last few months certainly have not been easy.  I’ve come a long way both physically and mentally since registering back in September.  There is a quote out there that reads, “I dare you to train for a marathon and not have it change your life.”  It is absolutely true.  My blog post about registering was totally sarcastic and mostly a joke.

Once training began my mindset shifted into work mode because marathon training is no joke.  There are no shortcuts.  I had to man up and be brave.  I logged the miles.  I put in the work.  Along the way I had my fair share of weather-related struggles—an 18 miler in a Nor’easter and a half marathon in freezing rain, just to name a few—but someone once said “what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger” and “you’re not made of sugar.”

Throughout my ups and downs but I am lucky to have a great support system to keep lifting me back up.

So thank you…

…to my mom and dad.  Thank you just isn’t enough.  I can’t wait to see you both in Boston after I cross that finish line!!!

…to Joe for getting it.  Your email on Thursday morning made me cry.  Thank you for all the tips, inspiration and relatable moments we shared over the last few months.

…to Eric W for being my number one fan on Strava and always trying to motivate me.  It’s comforting to know that someone else is going through a lot of the same things.  Let’s burn some boats on Monday!

…to Greg for turning me into a weight lifter.  I have learned so much from you.  It’s hard to believe I stuck with your training plans for this long but it’s those little moments of progress that keep me going.

…to Craig for helping to hold me accountable in the gym and showing up—even picking me up—on days that I was struggling.

….to Erin for also helping to hold me accountable and making my time in the gym that much more fun.  Also, thanks in advance for dyeing my hair on Sunday!!

…to Lee for not judging me for the amount of food I consume in the back office on a daily basis.

…to all my other coworkers for the endless support and encouragement along the way.

…to Katrina for getting me off the couch and out of the house after a lot of my long runs.  Your positive energy is contagious.

…to Lizzie for being there at the right time when I needed your friendship the most.

…to Sarah for always watching out for me.  We don’t see each other nearly enough but I know you’re always 11 minutes away.

…to Laura B for your daily words of inspiration.  Your morning texts helped start my day on a positive note during taper.

…to all my other clients and gym members for the texts, emails, Facebook messages and conversations.  I always try to motivate and inspire at work and in the gym but really it’s you guys that help keep me going.

…to Chris Q for your friendship.  I’m sorry I ditched you and the bus but I’m honored to share the course with you this year—and can I also say, who would have thought a few years ago when I convinced you to run the Piggy Trot that you would be running your THIRD Boston Marathon this year?!

…to Infa for constantly pumping me up.  Seriously, hype man of the year.

…to Matt for hooking my parents up on race day.  I also truly appreciate the random catch up phone calls throughout training.

…to all my other family, friends, run clubbers, social media followers and blog readers that I didn’t call out individually… thank you for joining me on this journey!  I will do my best on Monday to make you all proud!

Weekly Roundup 4.2-4.8

Week 15 of 16

“I’m on the right track baby, I was born to be brave.”

I am one week away from the Boston Marathon.  That’s 7 days.  SEVEN!  Can you believe it?

On Monday I followed Greg’s plan with lighter weight but the strangest thing happened.  I had a set of walking lunges to end my workout but I couldn’t do them!  My quads were cramping.  Practically shaking.  I called it quits and went for an easy 3 mile run.

I didn’t run on Tuesday but all day and night my legs were SO SORE to touch.  I was freaking out so I set my alarm 30 minutes early to #NormaTecAndChill before work on Wednesday.  I skipped my workout on Wednesday out of fear and hopped on the treadmill for 4 more easy miles.

I didn’t run again on Thursday.  I woke up Friday morning feeling good but totally lazy.  Rain was in the forecast for the afternoon but it was so cold in the morning.  I was not in the mood to bundle up so I went to the gym for a treadmill run and light workout instead.

The laziness continued on Saturday.  I ONLY had 10 miles on the schedule but I didn’t want to do it!  I talked to Joe yesterday and he felt the same way.  Taper is nice… but I take it way too seriously.  Couch and Gossip Girl FTW.

I finally did get my butt moving and got the job done in Cotuit but only because I had a date with Anejo that afternoon.  15 weeks down, 1 week to go!

Weekly Roundup 3.26-4.1

Week 14 of 16

“I’m on the right track baby, I was born to be brave.”

This was the first week of taper and I love taper time.  I feel awesome!  The hard work is done.  Now it’s time to focus on staying healthy and recharging both physically and mentally.

The biggest dilemma of the week is WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR?!  When I was preparing for Miami and Houston, I knew I would be running in shorts and a tank top.  Boston is such a wild card.  It could be cold and rainy.  It could be hot and humid.  Who freaking knows.  Even worse, the shoes I bought specifically for Boston hurt my feet!  They are the newest model of the shoe I have been wearing for the past few years and felt great for short runs.  However during last week’s 20 miler, they were pressing into the side of my left foot leaving a bruise.  I’m so sad.  They are BRIGHT—which I LOVE for racing.  Now I might be stuck with boring turquoise unless I want to dig out my old Miami shoes.  They have very little mileage on them but have been sitting in my closet for a year and don’t really go with my planned race day color scheme… #thestrugleisreal

Anyways, running this week was good.  I received 3 new workouts from Greg to accompany my taper even though I will confess to only completing 2 of them this week.  On Monday I worked out before Georgie practically begged me to bring her running and then I continued on my own to finish up my mileage for the day.

I was sad to miss Run Club on Tuesday night but I was in Osterville for an After Hours Event at our newly expanded location.  The coolest thing?  They got new chin up bars and I spontaneously jumped up and did two pull ups in a row!  The first one was from a jump so I knew I’d get some crap for that so I kept going for a second rep.  First time ever.

Wednesday was another workout then Georgie run.  I wasn’t planning on taking her because I was in the mood to just get it done and over with but she was whining and begging by the door for me to take her.  We had a few opportunities to turn back towards home—which she usually sits in the middle of the road and stares in the direction of home—but she kept pulling me along, passing all of our detours back home.  2.75 miles later we were both done for the day!

Friday.  Same story.  I don’t know what has gotten into G but I only brought her for a mile.  I ran 4 more miles then spent the rest of the day with Lizzie!  We failed to unlock Rainbow Road on my Super Nintendo Classic but we checked out opening weekend of a new brewery in town then met up with Sarah for carb loading at Amaris.  FAVE.

Saturday was BEAUTIFUL.  I was stuck inside working from 8am-1pm sad I was missing a perfect long run day.  When I got home I quickly changed (into shorts!!) and headed out.  I couldn’t pass that weather it up.  I originally planned on a long run of 14 this week but after working, I opted for 12.  It was long enough.

Since we were closed on Sunday for Easter, I thought about running but it wasn’t the best morning and I slept in until almost 9am!  Georgie and I continued to be lazy most of the day but got in two nice walks with my parents before and after the Easter ham.  It was a good day—especially when you’re mom gives you an Easter basket with wine and lots gummies!
